The first video (1:11) is a choir procession from the vestry, down the center aisle,
and then up the new stairway to the expanded gallery.
The second video (2:19) shows the effect of enlarging the rear gallery to
accommodate the choir and a new organ.
The organ committee has met since 2004; it engaged in analysis and evaluation of the
current instrument and learned, through the study of various types of instruments and the
acoustical principles at work in our space, what the problems with our current instrument
are, what acoustical issues our sanctuary faces, and what kind of instrument would be
best. The committee reported its findings to the vestry and congregation in 2006, and
plans for a new organ were initially included in Phase I of the Master Plan. The organ
project was removed from Phase I in the transition from the capital campaign to the
construction phase. Fr. Alan Gibson reconvened the committee in June 2010, with several
new members; the committee's charge was to find the best recommendation for a new
organ in liturgical, musical, aesthetic, and long-term economic terms. The committee has
extended its initial study by listening to different instruments, studying various types of
instruments, and consulting with external experts.
The committee has created reports of their best recommendation for an organ that will
allow flexibility for a broad expression of musical styles to serve this church and community
in a sustainable way for the next 200 years and beyond.
